Heroes Season3 Episode7: Eris Quod Sum

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Giving more sneak peeks into the episode 3.07 of “Heroes“, NBC network have let out four clips from the episode titled “Eris Quod Sum”. Compiled into one video player, the footage kicks off with the clip in which Elle talks with Claire about the help she may find at Pinehurst. It then switches to the scene when Peter wakes up, finds himself handcuffed to a bed and learns that Arthur has taken his abilities.

The third clip brings Arthur face-to-face with Mohinder. Discovering for the first time that Arthur has lied about his death, Mohinder questions how Arthur can give out such lie and talks about what he wants to achieve with Maya. In the last clip, which is the shortest of all, it is previewed that Tracey and Nathan confront Mohinder about him eliminating their abilities and using them for his experiment to save Maya.

Marking the end of season 3’s first half, this forthcoming episode will be aired on Monday, October 27, on 9/8c. It stars Kristen Bell, Hayden Panettiere, Ali Larter, Masi Oka, Adrian Pasdar, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Dania Ramirez and Milo Ventimiglia among others.

Heroes: Episode 3.5 : Angels and Monsters- Recap

Download Heroes Episode 3.5 “Angels and Monsters”

Arthur Petrelli is the leader of the villains. If you didn’t want to be spoiled about that fact before watching tonight’s episode of Heroes, neither did I. But NBC, in an effort to ruin television, ran promos announcing this very fact. I understand that ratings are down and Robert Forster is what passes for a big-name guest star on a show that has never regained the heat it had in the beginning, but revealing a huge spoiler about the entire premise and history of Heroes in a commercial during Knight Rider is truly reprehensible.

Nathan Petrelli has trouble sleeping because he can’t tell the difference between angels and monsters. Maybe that’s because the opposite of angels is actually demons, but Dan Brown must hold the copyright to that title. Nathan still thinks his powers are a gift from God, but Tracy knows that her powers came from Dr. Zimmerman. In the epic battle of science vs. religion, science wins this round.

Nathan gets an even bigger kick in the pants when Angela lets him know his power of flight is was also grown in a test tube. Angela requests their assistance in tracking down the Formula so experiments like the ones done on them will never happen again.

Peter, still frazzled from his future journey where he took Sylar’s power, snaps Sylar’s neck because he can’t accept their fraternal connection. Angela refuses to answer the now insane Peter, he starts slicing open her head to get to the gooey secrets inside. Sylar, now invincible, recovers from a snapped neck and knocks Peter out before he kills their mother. Angela takes care of her newly demented son while her formerly demented son goes out with HRG for some villain-hunting. It’s hard to believe that someone who talks to ghosts is the normal one in the family.

Claire’s two mommies fret over their missing daughter, because she’s out hunting Level 5 villains. Todays’ bad guy can create black holes out of thin air and send objects into a vortex so they’re gone forever. I don’t understand how Black Hole Man isn’t the most powerful person ever, since he can essentially get rid of whatever and whoever he wants. Claire sneaks up on him with a tazer, but he responds by tossing the tazer into a black hole. The villain tells his sob story and Claire learns that maybe not all villains are so bad.

Just then a Mexican standoff ensues when HRG and Sylar bust in to capture Black Hole Man. He thinks Claire set him up with her dad, but Claire is too busy being horrified by Sylar. Black Hole Man causes a distraction with a black hole and flees, leaving Claire to work out her seriously conflicted feelings with the whole situation.

Claire and HRG track the Black Hole Man down, and HRG orders him to create a black hole and suck Sylar in it. Claire, for reasons beyond all logic, is against this. The Black Hole Man, convinced that he’s actually a hero, refuses, and instead he creates a black hole and throws himself into it. There’s a difference between being a martyr and being an idiot, and Black Hole Man falls into the latter category. If I had his power I would rule the world.

Mohinder is still the fly, capturing neighbors and drug dealers and sticking them in his web while he makes false promises to Maya about curing her. This storyline would be boring even if it weren’t a total rip-off of a Jeff Goldblum film. Maya sneaks in and sees the people cocoon’s Mohinder has amassed in his loft, but Mohinder finds her and traps her in his cocoon.

Hiro tries to talk Adam Monroe into helping them track down the Formula, but the man who killed Hiro’s father isn’t very happy about being trapped in a coffin since the end of season 2. When Adam refuses, Hiro stops time and traps him in the coffin again, causing Monroe to call Hiro a “Japanese Nazi.” After accusing Angela of being the villainous mastermind behind the missing Formula, Adam offers to help find the real leader of the villains.

They go to a bar for help, but Adam Monroe tricks Hiro and Ando and escapes, because, as Ando explains, they’re the “worst heroes ever.” Unfortunately for Adam, he’s knocked out and captured by Knox, who has teamed up with Daphne on the order of Linderman.

With Knox, Adam and Hiro on board, Linderman commands Daphne to get one more member for their group: her future husband Matt Parkman. Daphne agrees, although she figures out Linderman isn’t really there. What she doesn’t know is what Heroes finally reveals in the final minutes: Linderman is a creation of Maury Parkman! That’s right, Matt’s crazy dad is back, making Nathan think he’s talking to God and orchestrating the team of villains.

Meanwhile, Angela has another future dream in which Tracy, Nathan and Peter are all dead at the hands of a mystery man with the apparent ability to paralyze people. The man in Angela’s dream is also the one pulling Maury Parkman’s strings. He’s being kept alive on a respirator, and his name is Arthur Petrelli! If you were shocked, you didn’t watch the previews or read the first paragraph of this recap, because a perfectly awesome twist was totally ruined by the promotion department of NBC.

Things are heating up on Heroes. Sylar’s maternal secret is out (at least to Peter), and the two brothers now share a hunger for slicing people’s heads off to see how they work. It’s a common structure for Heroes: after going to the future to see what will happen, the real story arc begins.

On Monday’s episode, “Angels and Monsters,” we’ll see the fallout of Peter’s future adventure as well as a few old and unfamiliar faces who are sure to shake things up.

Based on the photos, the episode will pick up with Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) and Sylar (Zachary Quinto) still fighting, though it seems that will be ended, as all sibling rivalries are, by their mother. This will be the first showdown between Peter and Angela (Cristine Rose) since he learned about her third son, so their relationship will probably be strained as always.

Speaking of strained relationships, this week’s episode of Heroes promises to delve deep into the multi-generational mythology of the series as we’ll get to see two fathers in action. Alan Blumenfeld returns as Maury Parkman, Matt’s nightmare of a father and in even more exciting news, Oscar-nominated actor Robert Forster makes his first appearance as the mysterious Arthur Petrelli.

We’ll see the two of them together, and since Maury was quite villainous the last time we saw him, there’s a good chance that Arthur Petrelli could be a bad guy as well. The two will definitely share a scene together, and given Arthur’s allegedly deceased status, odds are good it will be a flashback. Unless, of course, Arthur isn’t really dead, and on Heroes, that seems more likely than not.

Arthur Petreli (Robert Forster)

According to the official NBC description of the episode, Heroes will be packed with storylines for everyone. Hiro (Masi Oka) will try to get the Formula by any means necessary, from talking to Adam Monroe to befriending Daphne and Knox. Parkman (Greg Grunberg) continues his African vision quest and Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy) will toe the line of copyright infringement by becoming The Fly.

Maury Parkman (Alan Blumenfeld) and Arthur Petrelli (Robert Forster)

Nathan (Adrian Pasdar) and Tracy (Ali Larter) will keep working together to discover the truth about Dr. Zimmerman’s experiments while Claire (Hayden Panettiere) finally rises to the challenge and decides to go Level 5 hunting herself. Fans of HBO’s The Wire will be happy to know that not only is Jamie Hector (aka Marlo Stanfield) will around as Knox, but Claire’s first Level 5 villain is played by Andre Royo (Bubbles on the HBO drama) as a man who can create black holes. I don’t know much about particle physics, but I’m pretty sure that power could end the universe as we know it.

(S03E04) A lot of people have said in the comments that it appears as if I don’t like Heroes. Believe me, that’s not true. I’m actually a huge fan of the show. As a huge comic book junkie for more years and dollars than good sense will allow me to admit, the potential and general premise of this series is tremendously exciting. And the fact that it achieved such mainstream success right out of the gate was nothing short of astounding.

However, just like you’ll tell your wife whom you love more than anything else that she has a piece of lettuce stuck in her teeth, I’m not going to just put on rose-colored glasses and pretend that every scene, line and moment of each episode is solid gold. If I see lettuce, I’m going to call them on it. Because the way I see it, it’s just lettuce. It doesn’t change how wonderful and beautiful she is in the slightest. It’s just a little thing that needs to be taken care of because it’s distracting me and it doesn’t really fit the whole look her face is going for. Kind of like whatever’s going on with Mohinder.

Nikki, Tracy and Barbara were identical triplets who were separated at birth by Dr. Zimmerman, when then proceeded to perform experiments on them. We haven’t met Barbara yet, but I already find Tracy a lot more interesting than Niki/Jessica ever was. Sure, she’s just as mentally unhinged but at least she seems to be more capable. But in light of what we learned tonight, does that mean Micah’s gone for good?

Four Years From Now

Now a world filled with people containing abilities will destroy the world. It’s always something new, isn’t it?
Claire and Daphne are bad guys and in cahoots with the fear-based powers guy. But they’re still under the President’s authority, somehow? The future is an interesting place. Lots of mysteries and unanswered questions.

Meanwhile, Sylar is living in the Bennett household and is a 1950’s sitcom … mom (you thought I was going to say dad). And we finally learned what Sylar’s true ability is: understanding how things work. It works with everything, explaining why he looks at people’s brains to understand how their abilities to work. It also makes it far more plausible that he and Peter are brothers, as he can do with effort what Peter does automatically. But what does that mean about Nathan? And what about Peter now that he also has “the hunger.”

I did like the transition with Mohinder’s tape recorder into the “Four Years Later” setting. It also gave us a sneak preview of where his transformation may be taking him. In fact, maybe Heroes should have taken a nod from Desperate Housewives and jumped the whole show ahead four years as what’s happening here is a helluva lot more interesting than what’s going on in the present era. Well, except for the explosion. That kinda sucked. But the time we did spend in the future really brought together the threads that have been woven thus far this season.

Heroes

  • Why do battered women always defend their abusers when someone intervenes to help them on TV?
  • Why did we repeat so much of the Parkman in Africa sequence. If you need to repeat that much of it to make the story clear then maybe save it for the next episode. It’s going to turn into an episode of Extra where you have ten minutes of content and twenty minutes of blurbs about those ten minutes.
  • Future Peter has a raspy voice. He must have taken acting lessons in “badass” by Christian Bale.
  • Dania Ramirez managed to show even more boobs than usual. Is this really what she’s been reduced to: a sexual object?
  • Every time someone’s going to die this year, someone else swoops up to save them. Of course, Nathan would save Tracy. He’s banging her. Oh, and she’s important to his career.
  • It was good to see Molly again, but if that’s what she looks like for real, and four years in the future, how can they possibly use her in the present era? Puberty’s a bitch in shows that play with time travel. Just look what they’ve had to do with Walt on Lost.
  • If Parkman went to the future and saw all that we just saw, he didn’t seem to be much more important to the larger arc then than he is now.
  • Having a turtle as an animal guide must suck ass. It takes forever to get anywhere!

Heroes 3.04: I Am Become Death

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

The next episode of “Heroes” will be injected with more surprises regarding changes on the nature of the characters. Peter from the future visits the present one and urges him to use a powerful but dangerous ability in order to save the world in episode “I Am Become Death”.

Present Peter is also threatened at gunpoint by the future Claire and also had strange encounter with Sylar. After revealed in the two-hour season premiere that Sylar is the biological son of Angela, which means that he is also a Petrelli, Sylar changes from a villain to soft-hearted man who regards Peter’s presence as a brother.

Meanwhile, Mohinder is having confusion of what’s happening to him. He was previously revealed to have possessed a special ability that can make him climbing the wall with no gear on. Hiro and Ando come to Adam for information about the person that hired Daphne. Bennet in the meantime, tries to get rid of his partner.

“I Am Become Death” will be aired on Monday, October 6 at 9:00 P.M. by NBC.

On other news, the series’ creator Tim Kring reportedly is looking for a new character, described as a badass FBI agent, very much like
Tommy Lee Jones in “The Fugitive”. The character is slated to appear on the 14th episode of this season, EW’s Ausiello Files revealed.
